Website migration is moving your website from one URL to another URL. You can do this for example because of a change of CMS, a new domain name, a restructuring of the site or a new design. As with a move to a new house, you will need to arrange some things so that it is clear to everyone that you have moved. If you don't have these things in order, it can have a big impact on your Web site's position in search results. The position that your old URLs have achieved, you obviously want to take with you to the new URLs and therefore it is important to properly redirect to the new pages. You do this with a 301 redirect, which ensures that not only your visitors, but also the search engines land on the new page, with the values you had built up for the old URLs.
When migrating a website, it is important that you proceed carefully and in a structured manner. To start, you do a baseline measurement of your website. This baseline measurement contains important data and statistics for your website, such as how many visitors you currently have and what your search engine positions are. By doing this baseline measurement, you can check after the move if everything went well and if you have returned to the same position. Next, you create two overviews: an overview of the old URLs and an overview of the new URLs. You use these overviews when creating a relocation plan. If you are not going to change the URL structure, you can simply redirect all the old URLs to the new URLs with a 301 redirect. If the URL structure changes for the new Web site, and therefore some pages are dropped, you still need to make sure that those old URLs get a redirect. In that case, redirect them to the most relevant page or the homepage.
When you have set up all the redirects, you are going to test them in the test environment of the new website, to check if all pages are redirected correctly. Is this going well? Then it's time for the move and you can put the new website live! The last step now is to monitor the results of the new website and compare them with the baseline measurement. If things still go wrong unexpectedly, you can detect them immediately and make adjustments.
